Getting around: Shenzhen's metro system is extensive, modern, and inexpensive, covering most major attractions and neighborhoods with signage in both Chinese and English. Buses fill gaps between metro lines but are harder to navigate without Mandarin. DiDi, China's dominant rideshare app, is convenient and affordable throughout the city. Traditional taxis are plentiful but require cash or Alipay. A Shenzhen Tong transit card simplifies metro and bus fare payment.

Best time: October through December offers the most pleasant weather, with lower humidity, clear skies, and comfortable temperatures between 18 and 25 degrees Celsius.

Local food: Sample Cantonese dim sum at a traditional teahouse, try beef hot pot in the Huaqiangbei area, and explore the street food stalls of Dongmen Pedestrian Street for skewers, oyster omelettes, and fresh sugarcane juice.
