King Abdulaziz International Airport (JED/OEJN) is the primary international airport serving Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and one of the busiest airports in the Middle East. Strategically located on the Red Sea coast, it serves as a critical gateway for millions of Hajj and Umrah pilgrims traveling to the nearby holy city of Mecca each year. A major new terminal, the New Passenger Terminal (NPT), opened in 2018 after years of construction and is designed to dramatically increase capacity. The airport is a primary hub for Saudia (Saudi Arabian Airlines) and serves numerous international carriers connecting the Kingdom to destinations worldwide. The airport has historically featured a dedicated Hajj Terminal, a unique facility purpose-built to process the extraordinary surge of pilgrims during the annual Hajj season. Getting around: Jeddah has no metro system yet, though a light rail project is under development. Public buses exist but are limited in coverage and not widely used by tourists. Ride-hailing apps such as Uber and Careem are the most convenient and affordable options for getting around, with taxis also readily available. Renting a car is practical for exploring beyond the city center.

Best time: Visit between November and February when temperatures are pleasantly mild, ranging from 18 to 28 degrees Celsius, making outdoor sightseeing comfortable.

Local food: Do not miss fresh grilled fish and seafood at the Corniche restaurants, slow-cooked lamb mandi, mutabbaq stuffed pancakes, and traditional Saudi coffee paired with dates at a local cafe.

King Abdulaziz International Airport is a major international airport serving the cities of Jeddah and Mecca in Saudi Arabia, located 19 kilometres (12 mi) north of Jeddah and covering an area of 112 square kilometres (43 sq mi). In terms of annual passenger count, the airport is consistently the busiest in Saudi Arabia and one of the busiest in the Middle East, owing partly to its unique role in the annual Hajj pilgrimage. Opened in 1981, it was built to replace the now-demolished Jeddah International Airport located in Al-Kandarah, and is named after the founder of Saudi Arabia, King Abdulaziz.
