Getting around: Istanbul's Istanbulkart transit card covers the metro, tram, funicular, ferries, and buses, making it the most cost-effective way to navigate the city. The T1 tram line connects most major sights in the historic Sultanahmet district. Taxis are plentiful but metered fares should be confirmed before riding; BiTaksi and InDriver apps offer reliable rideshare alternatives. Ferries across the Bosphorus are both practical and scenic.

Best time: April through June and September through October offer mild temperatures, smaller crowds, and ideal sightseeing conditions.

Local food: Do not leave without trying a simit from a street cart, fresh fish sandwiches on the Galata Bridge, slow-cooked lamb doner, creamy künefe, and a glass of strong Turkish çay at a traditional tea house.
