Tenerife Norte-Ciudad de La Laguna Airport, coded TFN and GCXO, is one of two international airports serving the island of Tenerife in Spain's Canary Islands. It is located near the city of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, in the northern part of the island, and serves primarily domestic and some European routes. The airport gained international notoriety as the site of the 1977 Tenerife airport disaster, when two Boeing 747s collided on the runway at the nearby Los Rodeos Airport — now the same facility — resulting in 583 fatalities, the deadliest accident in aviation history. Following this disaster, significant safety improvements and infrastructure changes were implemented. Today, TFN primarily handles Iberia and Binter Canarias flights, connecting Tenerife to mainland Spain and other Canary Islands. It operates alongside Tenerife Sur Airport (TFS) in the south, which handles the majority of international tourist traffic.

Tenerife is the largest of Spain's Canary Islands, sitting in the Atlantic Ocean off the northwest coast of Africa. It draws millions of visitors each year with its year-round warm climate, striking volcanic landscapes, and a lively mix of beach resorts and authentic Spanish culture.

The island splits into two distinct personalities: the sun-soaked southern resorts of Playa de las Américas and Los Cristianos, and the greener, cooler north around the capital Santa Cruz and the historic town of La Laguna. Mount Teide, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and active volcano, dominates the center and is visible from almost everywhere on the island.

Getting around: TITSA buses cover the island reliably and affordably, connecting major towns and resorts. The TF-1 and TF-5 motorways make driving the most flexible option, with car rentals widely available at both airports. Taxis are plentiful but pricey for longer journeys, and rideshare apps like Uber operate in main tourist areas. There is no passenger rail network on the island.

Best time: Tenerife is pleasant year-round, but late spring (April–June) offers ideal weather, smaller crowds, and lower prices before peak summer season.

Local food: Try papas arrugadas (wrinkled salted potatoes) with mojo rojo or mojo verde sauce, fresh grilled fish at a local guachinche, and a glass of island-produced Tacoronte-Acentejo red wine.
