City & Place Guide

Pandas, spice, and ancient culture in southwest China's dynamic hub.

Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province, is one of China's most livable and culturally rich cities. Home to the famous giant panda breeding base, millennia-old temples, and a legendary street food scene, it rewards visitors at every turn.

Shuangliu District, site of Chengdu Tianfu International Airport, serves as a key gateway to the city and offers its own historical landmarks, wetland parks, and authentic local neighborhoods away from the main tourist crowds.

The city moves at a famously relaxed pace — locals linger over tea in teahouses, play mahjong in parks, and debate the merits of their beloved hotpot. This laid-back atmosphere, combined with world-class attractions, makes Chengdu an essential stop in any China itinerary.

  • Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding — watch pandas up close in a lush, naturalistic sanctuary.
  • Jinli Ancient Street — a restored Qing-dynasty lane packed with snacks, crafts, and Sichuan opera masks.
  • Wuhou Shrine — a revered temple-museum complex honoring Three Kingdoms hero Zhuge Liang.
  • Kuanzhai Alleyways — trio of pedestrian hutongs blending historic architecture with trendy cafes and shops.
  • Du Fu Thatched Cottage — a tranquil park-museum celebrating the Tang dynasty's greatest poet.
  • Shuangliu Wetland Park — a peaceful local retreat with birdwatching, cycling paths, and seasonal blooms.

Getting around: Chengdu's expanding metro network (12+ lines) connects Shuangliu Airport to the city center in about 30 minutes and links all major sights affordably. City buses are cheap but can be complex for non-Mandarin readers. Ride-hailing via DiDi is easy, inexpensive, and widely used; taxis are plentiful and metered. Renting a bicycle or e-bike is a pleasant option for exploring districts like Jinjiang or the panda base area.

Best time: Late March through May and September through November offer mild temperatures, lower humidity, and the best conditions for sightseeing.

Local food: Do not leave without trying Sichuan hotpot, mapo tofu, dan dan noodles, rabbit heads (a local delicacy), and a bowl of zhong dumplings drizzled in chili oil at a street stall.
