Suvarnabhumi Airport is Thailand's main international airport, located approximately 25 kilometers east of central Bangkok. It opened in 2006, replacing Don Mueang as the country's primary hub, and quickly became one of the busiest airports in Asia by passenger volume. The airport's name, meaning 'Golden Land' in Sanskrit, was chosen by King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Its main terminal was designed by Helmut Jahn and features a striking modernist structure with a large central glass atrium. Suvarnabhumi regularly handles over 60 million passengers annually in pre-pandemic years. The airport serves as the primary hub for Thai Airways and Bangkok Airways, and is a major connecting point for intercontinental and intra-Asian routes. A second terminal has been developed to expand overall capacity as passenger demand continues to grow.
Terminals
The airport has one main passenger terminal building plus a satellite terminal, with a second terminal (Terminal 2) opened in 2023 to expand capacity.
Getting to & from
The Suvarnabhumi Airport Rail Link connects the airport to central Bangkok's Phaya Thai station in approximately 30 minutes, supplemented by taxis, buses, and hotel shuttles.

City & Place Guide

Where ancient temples meet neon-lit street food chaos.

Bangkok is Thailand's sprawling capital, a city of contrasts where gilded Buddhist temples stand beside glittering skyscrapers and chaotic street markets. It draws millions of visitors each year with its rich culture, legendary cuisine, and electric nightlife.

The city sits along the Chao Phraya River, which once served as its main artery and still connects many of its most iconic landmarks. Historic neighborhoods like Rattanakosin preserve royal heritage, while areas like Sukhumvit and Silom pulse with modern urban energy.

Despite its size and frenetic pace, Bangkok rewards curious travelers with genuine warmth from locals, remarkable affordability, and an almost endless variety of experiences packed into a single destination.

  • Wat Phra Kaew (Grand Palace) — Thailand's most sacred temple complex, home to the Emerald Buddha.
  • Wat Arun — a stunning riverside spire best viewed at sunset from across the Chao Phraya.
  • Chatuchak Weekend Market — one of the world's largest markets with over 8,000 stalls.
  • Khao San Road — the legendary backpacker hub buzzing with street food, bars, and nightlife.
  • Jim Thompson House — an elegant museum showcasing Thai silk and traditional canal-side architecture.
  • Lumphini Park — a green oasis in the city center, perfect for early-morning walks among locals.

Getting around: Bangkok's BTS Skytrain and MRT subway cover major tourist and business districts efficiently and cheaply. The Chao Phraya Express Boat connects riverside temples and neighborhoods. Metered taxis are plentiful; always insist the driver uses the meter. Grab, the regional rideshare app, is reliable and avoids fare negotiations. Tuk-tuks are fun for short scenic hops but agree on a price beforehand.

Best time: The coolest and driest months of November through February offer the most comfortable conditions for sightseeing.

Local food: Don't miss pad thai from a street wok, fiery tom yum soup, mango sticky rice, boat noodles along the canals, and a late-night visit to any of the city's vibrant open-air night markets.
