Princess Juliana International Airport is the main international gateway serving Sint Maarten, the Dutch side of the island of Saint Martin in the northeastern Caribbean. It handles traffic for both the Dutch territory of Sint Maarten and the French collectivity of Saint-Martin, making it one of the busiest airports in the Lesser Antilles.
The airport gained worldwide fame for its proximity to Maho Beach, where aircraft on approach to Runway 10 pass at extremely low altitudes directly over sunbathers and spectators, creating a globally recognized aviation spectacle. This phenomenon has made SXM one of the most photographed airports in the world.
The airport suffered catastrophic damage from Hurricane Irma in September 2017, which destroyed much of the terminal and infrastructure. Reconstruction and phased reopening took place over subsequent years, restoring international operations and improving facilities.
