It opened in 2011 as a replacement for the older Shantou Waisha Airport, providing modern infrastructure for a densely populated region with a large overseas diaspora.
The airport handles domestic routes across mainland China as well as international and regional services, particularly to destinations with significant Chaoshan emigrant communities in Southeast Asia. It has grown steadily since opening, reflecting the economic importance of the Chaoshan region.
The facility is located in Rongcheng District of Jieyang and is jointly accessible to residents of Shantou and Chaozhou, making it a multi-city airport serving a combined population of several million people.

Jieyang Chaoshan International Airport is an international airport serving the cities of Jieyang, Shantou and Chaozhou in South Central China's Guangdong province. It is located in the towns of Paotai and Denggang in Jiedong District, Jieyang, Guangdong. It was part of a relocation plan from the original Shantou Waisha Airport, and the site was chosen to be near the geographic center of Jieyang, Shantou, and Chaozhou. The airport was put into service on 15 December 2011, with the simultaneous shut-down of Shantou Waisha Airport as a commercial airport.
