Platov International Airport is a modern international airport serving Rostov-on-Don, a major city in southern Russia near the Don River. It replaced the older Rostov-on-Don Airport (Rostov Vostochny) and was purpose-built to meet growing aviation demand in the region.
The airport opened in 2017 and was named after Matvei Platov, a famous Cossack general from the Napoleonic Wars era. It was constructed in part to handle increased traffic associated with the 2018 FIFA World Cup, for which Rostov-on-Don was one of the host cities.
Platov serves both domestic Russian routes and a range of international destinations, functioning as a key hub for air travel in the southern federal district of Russia.
