Geneina is the capital of West Darfur State in western Sudan, situated near the border with Chad. Getting around: Internal transport relies on informal taxis, motorcycle taxis known locally as amjad, and shared minibuses running set routes within the city. There is no functioning rail service. Long-distance travel to Khartoum or other cities is possible by occasional UN humanitarian flights, chartered planes, or extremely long overland journeys on unpaved roads. Rideshare apps do not operate here.

Best time: The cooler dry season from November through February offers the most comfortable temperatures and the most passable roads for travel.

Local food: Try asida, a thick sorghum porridge served with stewed meat or okra sauce, along with kisra flatbread and sweet hibiscus karkadeh tea.
