Named after the indigenous Donyi Polo sun-moon faith of the Adi tribe, the airport marks a historic milestone in connecting India's frontier northeastern state with the rest of the country. Situated at an elevation of approximately 328 feet in the foothills of the eastern Himalayas, it replaces the limited-capacity Naharlagun helipad as the region's primary air gateway.
