Agatti Airport

Agatti Airport (IATA: AGX) is the only airport in the Union Territory of Lakshadweep, situated on the narrow coral atoll of Agatti Island in the Arabian Sea. Built on reclaimed land barely 14 feet above sea level, its single runway stretches close to the island's lagoon edge, making it one of India's most scenically dramatic landing approaches. The airport serves as the primary entry point for tourists and residents visiting the pristine coral archipelago, with onward connectivity to other islands via government ferries and speedboats.

Travel tips

• All non-Lakshadweep residents require a mandatory entry permit issued by the Lakshadweep Administration before travelling to the islands — apply well in advance online or through a registered tour operator.
• Luggage allowance on flights to Agatti is strictly limited to 15 kg checked baggage on most small aircraft; pack light and carry snorkelling gear only if absolutely necessary, as resorts often provide equipment.
• Carry sufficient cash (Indian Rupees) from the mainland, as ATM availability on Agatti is limited and card payment acceptance is minimal on the islands.
• The best time to visit is between October and May; avoid the monsoon months of June to September when flights are frequently cancelled or delayed due to rough weather.
• Alcohol is prohibited on all inhabited islands of Lakshadweep except at Bangaram Island Resort which holds a special permit; plan accordingly.
• Book accommodation and inter-island ferry/speedboat transfers well in advance, especially during the peak October–April tourist season, as options are extremely limited.

Development: The Airports Authority of India has periodically discussed strengthening the runway infrastructure at Agatti to accommodate larger ATR 72-class aircraft safely, given the challenging coral terrain and weight restrictions. Proposals under the UDAN regional connectivity scheme have also explored improving flight frequency to make Lakshadweep more accessible from more Indian cities.
