Opened
2018
Location
Van Don, Vietnam
Van Don International Airport (IATA: VDO, ICAO: VVVD) is located on Van Don Island in Quang Ninh Province, northeastern Vietnam, approximately 50 kilometres from Ha Long City. It opened in December 2018 and is notable for being the first privately invested and operated airport in Vietnam, developed by Sun Group.
The airport was designed to serve the growing tourism demand in the Ha Long Bay and Quang Ninh region, one of Vietnam's premier UNESCO World Heritage destinations. Its construction was part of a broader infrastructure push to develop Van Don as an economic and tourism hub.
Despite its modern facilities, the airport has operated below capacity since opening, with limited airline routes. Operations were also disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, which significantly reduced traffic across Vietnamese airports.
Terminals
The airport features a single passenger terminal with a modern design capable of handling approximately 2 million passengers per year.
Getting to & from
Ground transport from the airport to Ha Long City and surrounding areas is primarily by road, including taxi and shuttle bus services.
