Mandalay is Myanmar's second-largest city and the cultural heart of the country, sitting along the Irrawaddy River in the country's dry central zone. Once the last royal capital of the Burmese kingdom before British annexation in 1885, it retains a deep sense of history through its palace ruins, monasteries, and traditional crafts.

Getting around: Trishaws and motorbike taxis are common for short distances, while metered taxis and app-based services like Grab (where available) handle longer trips. Renting a bicycle or e-bike is a popular and affordable way to explore the city. Shared pickup trucks serve some routes, and boat trips on the Irrawaddy connect Mandalay to nearby towns like Mingun.

Best time: November through February offers the most comfortable weather, with cool, dry days ideal for sightseeing before the intense heat of March through May.

Local food: Try Mandalay-style mont di (rice noodles in a light fish sauce), nan gyi thohk (thick noodle salad), and Shan tofu salad, best sampled at bustling local tea shops and morning markets.
