Voronezh is a major regional city in southwestern Russia, situated on the Voronezh River near its confluence with the Don. Founded in 1586 as a fortress, it gained lasting fame as the site where Peter the Great built Russia's first navy in the 1690s, and that proud history shapes much of the city's identity today.

The city was almost entirely destroyed during World War II, serving as a front-line battleground for nearly two years, then rebuilt in Soviet style.
