Santa Cruz de la Sierra is Bolivia's largest and fastest-growing city, sprawling across the eastern lowlands near the Brazilian border. Unlike the high-altitude capitals of La Paz and Sucre, Santa Cruz sits at just 416 meters, giving it a warm, humid, tropical climate year-round.

The city radiates outward from the historic Plaza 24 de Septiembre in a series of concentric ring roads called anillos, making orientation relatively straightforward. Its prosperous economy, driven by agriculture and natural gas, fuels a lively dining, nightlife, and shopping scene that feels distinctly cosmopolitan.

Santa Cruz also serves as the main jumping-off point for visits to the Jesuit Missions of Chiquitos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as Amboró National Park and the vast Pantanal wetlands to the east.

Getting around: Within the city, micros (small buses) and minibuses cover most routes cheaply but can be crowded and confusing for newcomers. Taxis are abundant and affordable; always agree on a fare before departing or use radio taxis for safety. Rideshare apps including Uber and InDriver operate in Santa Cruz and are generally reliable. For day trips and the Jesuit Mission circuit, renting a car or booking a guided tour is the most practical option.

Best time: May through September, the dry austral winter, offers the most comfortable weather with lower humidity and minimal rain, though brief cold southern winds called surazos can occasionally sweep through.

Local food: Try local specialties such as majadito (a savory rice-and-dried-beef dish), sopa de maní (peanut soup), and fresh tropical juices, then cap the night with a cold Paceña beer or chicha at one of the city's many lively outdoor restaurants.
