The airport is situated in the Alcantarí area, approximately 35 kilometers south of Sucre, at an elevation of roughly 2,800 meters (9,186 feet) above sea level.
The facility was developed to handle larger aircraft and greater passenger volumes than its predecessor, offering improved runway capacity and modern terminal infrastructure. Despite holding an international designation, the airport primarily handles domestic routes connecting Sucre to La Paz, Santa Cruz, and other Bolivian cities.
