Velasco is a sparsely populated province in the Santa Cruz Department of eastern Bolivia, anchored by the small town of San Ignacio de Velasco. The region sits within the broader Chiquitania, a cultural and ecological zone famous for its Jesuit mission heritage, dry tropical forests, and remarkable biodiversity.

Life here moves at a relaxed pace, shaped by ranching traditions and indigenous Chiquitano customs. Within the province, taxis and motorcycle taxis (motos) handle town trips, while 4WD vehicles or hired trucks are essential for reaching remote missions and Noel Kempff Mercado, especially in wet season when dirt roads flood.

Best time: Visit during the dry season from May through October for passable roads, better wildlife sightings, and comfortable temperatures.

Local food: Look for locro de gallina (hearty chicken and rice stew), fried paiche fish from local rivers and lakes, and chicha de maíz, the traditional fermented corn drink shared at community gatherings.
