Sarajevo International Airport, officially known as Sarajevo International Airport Butmir, is the busiest airport in Bosnia and Herzegovina and serves as the main air gateway to the capital, Sarajevo. Located approximately 6 kilometres southwest of the city centre in the Butmir neighbourhood, it handles both commercial passenger flights and cargo operations.
The airport gained significant historical recognition during the 1984 Winter Olympics, when it served as a key transport hub for athletes and visitors. It later endured damage during the Siege of Sarajevo (1992–1995) and underwent substantial reconstruction and modernisation in the post-war years.
Today, the airport connects Sarajevo to numerous European destinations and operates year-round, with seasonal peaks driven by the Bosnian diaspora, tourism, and business travel. It is managed by the Federal Government of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
