Remote iron-ore heartland on South Africa's arid Northern Cape frontier.

Sishen is a small mining town in the John Taolo Gaetsewe District of the Northern Cape, best known as home to one of the world's largest open-pit iron-ore mines, operated by Kumba Iron Ore. The settlement exists primarily to support the mine and its workforce, giving it a functional, industrial character rather than a conventional tourist atmosphere.

Despite its utilitarian purpose, the surrounding Kalahari landscape offers stark, dramatic scenery, with red dunes, sparse thorn-bush savanna, and wide open skies that appeal to travellers drawn to off-the-beaten-path destinations. The nearby town of Kathu provides most visitor amenities, including accommodation and basic services.

Getting around: Sishen has no public transit system; a private vehicle or hired car from Upington or Kathu is the most practical option. Shared taxis run loosely between Kathu and surrounding communities but are infrequent and unreliable for tourists. Rideshare apps have minimal coverage in this remote area, so arranging transport in advance is strongly advised.

Best time: Visit between May and August when the Southern Hemisphere winter brings cooler, drier conditions and more comfortable temperatures in this semi-arid region.

Local food: Try traditional Northern Cape dishes such as skilpadjies (grilled liver parcels), potjiekos slow-cooked over open fire, and boerewors rolls available at local braai spots and roadside stalls in Kathu.
