San Juan's historic downtown seaplane and commuter airfield.

Opened
1930
Location
San Juan, Puerto Rico
Fernando Luis Ribas Dominicci Airport, commonly known as Isla Grande Airport, is a small general aviation and commuter airport located on a peninsula in San Juan Harbor, just west of Old San Juan. It serves primarily charter flights, small regional carriers, and general aviation traffic, and has historically been associated with seaplane operations connecting Puerto Rico to neighboring islands. The airport is named after Fernando Luis Ribas Dominicci, a Puerto Rican pilot who died in the 1986 Challenger Space Shuttle disaster. It is operated by the Puerto Rico Ports Authority and sits in close proximity to the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport, which handles the bulk of commercial traffic for the San Juan metropolitan area. Due to its central urban location and limited runway length, the facility is restricted to smaller aircraft. It has at times hosted short-hop interisland services and remains an important hub for charter and private aviation in the San Juan area.

City & Place Guide

Where Caribbean beaches meet 500 years of Spanish history.

San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico, blends colonial grandeur with vibrant modern culture on the northeastern coast of the island. The cobblestone streets of Old San Juan are lined with colorful 16th-century buildings, massive Spanish fortresses, and lively plazas that pulse with salsa music after dark.

Beyond the historic district, neighborhoods like Condado and Santurce offer upscale hotels, trendy restaurants, and a buzzing arts scene. Whether you're after surf, history, nightlife, or outstanding food, San Juan delivers an experience unlike anywhere else in the Caribbean.

  • •Castillo San Felipe del Morro — iconic 16th-century fortress with sweeping ocean views
  • •Castillo San Cristóbal — largest Spanish fort in the Americas with rich military history
  • •Old San Juan — colorful colonial streetscape perfect for walking and exploring
  • •El Yunque National Forest — only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System, a short drive away
  • •Condado Beach — calm, accessible urban beach ideal for swimming and sunbathing

Getting around: Old San Juan is best explored on foot; the free trolley connects major landmarks within the walled city. Rideshares like Uber and local taxis are widely available for trips to Condado, Miramar, and Santurce. Public buses (AMA) serve the metro area at low cost but can be slow, and a Tren Urbano rail line links the suburbs to Santurce for a quick, affordable ride.

Best time: Visit from mid-January through April for sunny skies, lower humidity, and reduced hurricane risk.

Local food: Don't leave without trying mofongo (mashed fried plantains with garlic and pork), fresh seafood at La Placita de Santurce, and a cold Medalla beer or a classic piña colada, said to have been invented in San Juan.
