Aysén Region, in Chilean Patagonia, is one of the most remote and pristine wilderness areas on Earth. Carved by glaciers and laced with fjords, rivers, and temperate rainforests, it draws trekkers, fly-fishers, and nature lovers seeking landscapes largely untouched by mass tourism.

The regional capital, Coyhaique, serves as the main hub, offering services and access to surrounding parks and reserves. The legendary Carretera Austral highway runs through the region, connecting isolated villages and stunning scenery across hundreds of kilometers of mostly unpaved road.

Despite its rugged reputation, Aysén has growing infrastructure for adventure tourism, including lodges, guided expeditions, and ferry connections. Travelers should come prepared for rapidly changing weather and limited connectivity in more remote areas.

Getting around: There is no passenger rail in Aysén. Long-distance buses connect Coyhaique to towns along the Carretera Austral, though services are infrequent and schedules vary seasonally. Taxis and colectivos (shared taxis) operate within Coyhaique, while renting a 4WD vehicle or camper is the most flexible way to explore the region's remote roads. Ferries operated by Navimag and other companies link coastal communities inaccessible by road.

Best time: Visit from November to March for the Southern Hemisphere summer, when daylight is long, trails are accessible, and ferry schedules are most frequent.

Local food: Try centolla (king crab) and locally smoked lamb asado, paired with artisanal cheeses and craft beers produced in the Coyhaique area.
