Antofagasta is northern Chile's largest city, a bustling port hub shaped by the 19th-century nitrate boom and today's copper mining industry. Perched between the world's driest desert and the cold Humboldt Current, it offers dramatic coastal scenery, a rich immigrant heritage, and a surprisingly vibrant urban culture.

The city serves as a practical base for exploring the Atacama Desert, nearby ghost towns, and striking rock formations. While not a classic tourist destination, it rewards curious travelers with authentic Chilean life, excellent seafood, and easy access to some of South America's most otherworldly landscapes.

Getting around: City buses (micros) are cheap and frequent along main corridors, while shared taxis (colectivos) running fixed routes are a faster local option. Renting a car is strongly recommended for reaching desert attractions and ghost towns outside the city.

Best time: Visit between October and April for the mildest coastal temperatures, though Antofagasta's arid climate keeps weather relatively stable and rain virtually nonexistent year-round.

Local food: Try freshly caught locos (Chilean abalone), chupe de jaiba (creamy crab casserole), and ceviche at the Mercado Central, where vendors showcase the region's outstanding Pacific seafood.
