Best time: Visit from November through March for the Southern Hemisphere summer, when wildlife is most active, daylight hours are long, and ferry and tour schedules run at full capacity.

Local food: Try centolla (king crab) fresh from the Strait of Magellan, lamb slow-roasted Patagonian style, and warming caldillo de congrio fish stew at local restaurants along the waterfront.
