Lonquimay is a small town in the Araucanía Region of southern Chile, nestled in a high Andean valley near the Argentine border. Surrounded by ancient araucaria forests, volcanic peaks, and the rushing Biobío River, it offers some of the most dramatic and unspoiled landscapes in Patagonia's northern reaches.

The area is home to the Pehuenche people, a Mapuche subgroup with deep ties to the araucaria pine, whose seeds — called piñones — have sustained them for centuries. This cultural heritage is woven into the fabric of local life and gives the region a distinctive identity beyond its natural attractions.

Lonquimay attracts hikers, skiers, and adventure travelers seeking off-the-beaten-path experiences without the crowds of more famous Chilean destinations. Infrastructure is modest, lending the town an authentic, frontier character.

Getting around: Lonquimay is best explored with a private vehicle or rental car, as distances between attractions are significant and public transport is limited. Regional buses connect Lonquimay to Temuco and Curacautín on a daily basis, but schedules are infrequent. Taxis and remises (private hire cars) operate within town. Rideshare apps are not available here.

Best time: Visit December through March for summer hiking and camping, or July through August for skiing at Corralco with reliable snow.

Local food: Try piñones roasted or boiled, hearty cazuela stew, freshly caught river trout, and homemade merkén-spiced preparations reflecting Pehuenche culinary tradition.
