Wild volcano, whale songs, and world-class wines await.
Pico Island, the second-largest island in the Azores archipelago, is dominated by Mount Pico, Portugal's highest peak at 2,351 metres. Its dramatic volcanic landscape, framed by centuries-old lava fields and vineyards, gives the island a raw, otherworldly beauty found nowhere else in Europe.
The island is celebrated for its UNESCO-listed viticulture landscape, where vines grow inside curious basalt-wall enclosures called currais that protect them from Atlantic winds. Whale watching here is among the best in the world, as sperm whales are resident year-round in these nutrient-rich waters.
Despite its natural riches, Pico remains refreshingly uncrowded and unhurried. Visitors enjoy authentic Azorean culture, superb seafood, and hiking trails that wind through lava tubes, crater lakes, and coastal cliffs.

Getting around: Pico has no railway; public buses (STARPICO) connect the main villages but run infrequently, making them unreliable for flexible sightseeing. Renting a car is strongly recommended and is the most practical way to explore the island's length. Taxis are available in Madalena and can be arranged for excursions, but rideshare apps do not operate here.
Best time: Late May through September offers the warmest, driest weather ideal for hiking Mount Pico and whale watching, with July and August being the sunniest months.
Local food: Try lapas (grilled limpets with garlic and butter), fresh tuna prepared multiple ways, Queijo do Pico cheese, and sip the island's prized Verdelho wine straight from local cooperatives.
