Chiredzi is a small town in the southeastern lowveld of Zimbabwe, Masvingo Province, sitting at a low altitude that keeps it warm and dry for much of the year. Despite its modest size, Chiredzi is a convenient base for exploring Gonarezhou National Park, one of Zimbabwe's largest and most dramatic wilderness areas. The town has a frontier feel, with a no-frills character that suits travelers heading into the bush rather than seeking urban comforts.

Renting a 4x4 vehicle is strongly recommended for anyone venturing into Gonarezhou or surrounding conservancies, as roads can be rough and remote.

Best time: Visit between May and October during the dry season, when wildlife concentrates around water sources and roads into Gonarezhou are passable.

Local food: Try sadza served with nyama (grilled game or beef), fresh tilapia from local rivers, and sugarcane juice widely available around the Triangle area.
