Šiauliai is Lithuania's fourth-largest city, located in the northern part of the country on the main rail and road corridor between Vilnius and Riga. It has a long history as a trading and manufacturing hub, and today blends Soviet-era architecture with a gradually modernizing city center.
The city's biggest draw is the extraordinary Hill of Crosses, a pilgrimage site roughly 12 km north of the center where hundreds of thousands of crosses of every size have been planted over centuries of Lithuanian devotion and defiance. Beyond that landmark, Šiauliai offers a compact pedestrian high street, a handful of good museums, and a low-key local atmosphere largely free of tourist crowds.
