AirlinesAirports profile

Former U.S. military base turned international gateway in northwest Puerto Rico.

Opened
1973
Location
Aguadilla, Puerto Rico
Rafael Hernández International Airport, designated BQN/TJBQ, is located in Aguadilla on Puerto Rico's northwest coast. The airport is named after Rafael Hernández Marín, a celebrated Puerto Rican composer and patriot. It serves as an important regional airport offering both domestic and international connections. The airport was formerly Ramey Air Force Base, a strategic U.S. Air Force installation that closed in 1973 and was subsequently converted to civilian aviation use. Its long runways, originally built for military aircraft, make it capable of handling large commercial jets. BQN provides an alternative to San Juan's Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport for residents and visitors in the western and northern parts of Puerto Rico, reducing travel times significantly for those communities.
Terminals
The airport operates a single passenger terminal handling both domestic and international arrivals and departures.
Getting to & from
Ground transportation options include taxis, rental cars, and private shuttles connecting the airport to Aguadilla and surrounding municipalities in northwest Puerto Rico.

JetBlue Airways and Spirit Airlines are among the primary carriers serving Rafael Hernández, with seasonal service from additional U.S. mainland carriers.

City & Place Guide

Surf, history, and Caribbean charm on Puerto Rico's northwest coast.

Aguadilla is a laid-back coastal city on Puerto Rico's northwest corner, known for world-class surf breaks, a refreshing Atlantic breeze, and a slower pace than San Juan. The city blends colonial history with outdoor adventure, drawing surfers, history buffs, and beach lovers alike.

Once home to Ramey Air Force Base, much of that land has been repurposed into parks, a golf course, and the Rafael Hernández Airport, giving the city a unique open, spacious feel. The surrounding region, sometimes called the Porta del Sol, offers stunning sunsets, hidden beaches, and easy access to neighboring towns like Rincón and Isabela.

  • •Crash Boat Beach — vivid blue waters and a colorful pier popular for swimming and snorkeling.
  • •Punta Borinquen Lighthouse — historic 19th-century lighthouse with dramatic clifftop ocean views.
  • •Survival Beach — a local favorite surf break with consistent waves and a rugged natural setting.
  • •Lake Guajataca — a serene inland reservoir surrounded by forest, good for kayaking and hiking.
  • •Aguadilla Ice Skating Rink — a beloved quirky local landmark and one of Puerto Rico's few indoor rinks.
  • •Ramey Golf Course — an affordable oceanside public course set on former Air Force Base land.

Getting around: Aguadilla has no rail service; getting around is easiest by rental car, which is strongly recommended for exploring beaches and surrounding towns. Público vans (shared taxis) connect Aguadilla to nearby municipalities but run on irregular schedules. Uber and local taxi services are available but limited compared to San Juan.

Best time: December through April offers the driest, most pleasant weather with lower humidity, ideal for beach activities and sightseeing.

Local food: Try fresh seafood at the beach kiosks near Crash Boat, including empanadillas, alcapurrias, and whole fried fish washed down with cold local beer or coconut water.
