Aviano Air Base is a joint-use military airfield located in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of northeastern Italy, near the town of Aviano in the Province of Pordenone. It serves as the home of the 31st Fighter Wing of the United States Air Force and is one of the primary U.S. Air Force installations in Europe.
The base hosts F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft and supports a wide range of NATO missions and exercises. It played a significant operational role during the 1999 NATO intervention in Kosovo and remains a strategically important installation.
Although technically a joint civil-military airport with the IATA code AVB, commercial passenger traffic is extremely limited and the facility is primarily dedicated to military operations under a Status of Forces Agreement between the United States and Italy.
