Lowell, Massachusetts sits at the confluence of the Merrimack and Concord rivers, about 30 miles northwest of Boston. Once the cradle of the American Industrial Revolution, its 19th-century textile mills drew thousands of workers and shaped the nation's manufacturing identity. Today those red-brick mills have been repurposed into museums, galleries, apartments, and restaurants.

Rideshare apps like Uber and Lyft are readily available, and the compact downtown and canal district are very walkable once you arrive.

Best time: Late spring through early fall (May–September) offers the most pleasant weather and coincides with outdoor festivals, canal boat tours, and the beloved Lowell Folk Festival in late July.

Local food: Sample Southeast Asian cuisine — particularly Cambodian dishes like fish amok and lok lak — at the many authentic restaurants along Middlesex Street, reflecting Lowell's large Cambodian-American community.
