Aloha Airlines was a major Hawaiian carrier that operated scheduled passenger and cargo services throughout the Hawaiian Islands and to destinations on the U.S. mainland. Founded in 1946, it was one of Hawaii's oldest and most established airlines, competing primarily with Hawaiian Airlines for interisland traffic.
The airline operated Boeing 737 aircraft for much of its history and expanded to include transpacific routes to the U.S. West Coast. It also maintained a significant cargo division known as Aloha Air Cargo.
Aloha Airlines ceased operations on March 31, 2008, after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The airline's collapse was attributed to rising fuel costs, intense low-fare competition, and financial difficulties that proved insurmountable. Its shutdown left thousands of employees without jobs and significantly disrupted air travel in Hawaii.
