The Canadair Regional Jet 100 (CRJ100) is a twin-engine regional jet developed by Canadair, later acquired by Bombardier Aerospace, based on the Canadair Challenger 600 business jet. It was designed to offer jet-speed performance on short regional routes, replacing aging turboprops and smaller jets at many carriers.
Entering service in 1992, the CRJ100 quickly became popular with regional airlines in North America and Europe due to its economics, reliability, and passenger appeal compared to turboprops. It seats up to 50 passengers in a typical single-class configuration.
Production of the CRJ100 ended as it was superseded by the improved CRJ200, which offered more fuel-efficient CF34-3B1 engines. Many CRJ100s have been retired or converted to freighter and special-mission roles, though some remain in service globally.
