Delhi International Airport Private Limited (DIAL) has taken several measures to make life easier for passengers who are stranded at the airport for long hours due to the fog this winter.
They have planned to have heated prefabricated tents with information displays to accommodate passengers outside the terminal building. Food centres inside the terminals will have extra counters and will remain open 24 hours. Helplines are being set up to provide information and a free parking connected to the airport by a shuttle service will accommodate extra vehicles. Entry to the terminals will be regulate to avoid overcrowding. On the technological front, Delhi airport is equipped with the Category IIIB Instrument Landing System which allows aircrafts to land even when visibility is down to 50m. Ten parking stands can handle CAT IIIB aircraft, and soon nine more will have the facility. In addition there will be vehicles on the ground to guide the planes.
However the new technology may not prevent delays on domestic flights. According to DIAL's Chief Operating Officer, a centralised Emergency Response and Interactive Centre (ERIC), will be set up to coordinate between air traffic control, apron control and the airlines ther eby making operations smoother.
